The State of Florida does not adequately fund its public schools. Merely criticizing the Legislature and the political process, however, will do nothing to change the status quo. One option to enhance our current funding is to redirect unneeded construction funds to school operations. Student growth is at a standstill in Central Florida so there is no better time to ask the Legislature to free Orange County from the restrictions that prohibit us from using currently collected ad valorem funds for school construction on operations.
Another option is to amend the Florida Constitution to require the Flroida Legislature to return school public funding to pre-lottery levels. Before the Florida Lottery 61.5% of the state budget went to fund public education. Today, only 50.5% of the state budget funds public education.
